The following lesson plan provides a brief example of how iDVSTM technology can be utilized in the classroom.  This activity was developed by staff members at the Burlington County, New Jersey, Educational Media & Technology Center to be utilized as a teacher training exercise.  It can also easily be adapted as an individual or collaborative student learning exercise.  The video “Grand Canyon of the Colorado” is available for download in the Guest / Social Studies Catalog on the e-Mod / iDVSTM Corporate Server.

Video Title:                              Grand Canyon of the Colorado
Curriculum Focus:                Art Project

Read this lesson plan completely before watching the video.

After viewing the program all the way through, follow the instructions for each of the items below.  (For the purpose of this teacher training exercise, your group should skip through the video and hunt for segments that support the activities listed below.)

Frame 00:39:11 is a photo of a river.  Use the Draw tool and the Title tool to outline and identify the simple elements used in drawing landscapes that can convey distance and give depth to a drawing.  Point out natural shading of dark and light that can be adapted to pen & ink, pencil or charcoal drawings.  Use the font settings to enable the text to be easily read when the video is projected onto a large classroom screen.  Use the Audio tool to suggest how the sparkles on the river and the mist could be shown in a monochromatic medium.

Consider Frame 04:44:24 as the subject of an art project.  Circle and discuss at least three elements of texture, shape, movement and juxtaposition that make this a dynamic subject to paint or draw.  Use the Draw tool and the Sticky Note tool.  Adjust font size/style and sticky note background color, as appropriate.

Locate the section of the sound track where Lt. Joseph Ives describes the Grand Canyon.  Use appropriate annotation tools to create a sound clip (starting/ending points) that includes his explanation of the value of the canyon.

Locate Frame 10:22:01.  Use the Draw tool to point out shades and lines used to suggest depth.  Draw in four vanishing lines, two above eye level and two below eye level.  Be sure the color of your lines contrasts with the background.  Use the Title tool to label the lines, as appropriate.  Adjust font/style, as necessary.

Name and save your work with the appropriate file extension in the same folder as the video file “Grand Canyon of the Colorado”.

PC:          <name>.anw

Mac:          <name>.anx

To play your annotation file (and the associated “Grand Canyon of the Colorado” video), open the e-Mod / iDVSTM Viewer and browse to the location of your annotation file.  When you open the annotation file, the video file will automatically be opened, as well.
