Grand Canyon of the Colorado
The following lesson plan provides a brief example of how iDVSTM technology can be utilized in the classroom. This activity was developed by staff members at the Burlington County, New Jersey, Educational Media & Technology Center to be utilized as a teacher training exercise. It can also easily be adapted as an individual or collaborative student learning exercise. The video “Grand Canyon of the Colorado” is available for download in the Guest / Social Studies Catalog on the e-Mod / iDVSTM Corporate Server.
Video Title: Grand Canyon of the Colorado
Read this lesson plan completely before watching the video.
After viewing the program all the way through, follow the instructions for each of the items below. (For the purpose of this teacher training exercise, your group should skip through the video and hunt for segments that support the activities listed below.)
Find a suitable image showing the depth of the strata in the Grand Canyon. Use the Draw tool to point out several levels and use the Text tool to label the image “Examples of Strata.” Use the font settings to enable the text to be easily read when the video is projected onto a large classroom screen.
Locate an image of the river as it cuts through the canyon. Use the Sound tool and record a brief explanation indicating how old the strata is at the bottom of the canyon.
Locate an image showing plant life at the bottom of the Canyon. Use the Draw tool to circle several examples. Use the Text tool to provide a brief explanation to describe how the biome at the bottom differs from the biome at the rim. Adjust font sizes, as indicated above.
Locate the sound track where Lt. Joseph Ives describes the Grand Canyon. Create a clip that includes his explanation of the value of the canyon
Extra Credit: Determine the total volume of the Grand Canyon within the park boundary in terms of cubic meters. Convert the figure and calculate the number of 60 cubic yard dump truck loads it would take to fill the canyon. Assuming six dump locations handling one truck every three minutes seven days a week, how many fortnights would it take to complete the job?
