Viruses and Monerans
The following lesson plan provides a brief example of how iDVSTM technology can be utilized in the classroom. This activity was developed by staff members at the Burlington County, New Jersey, Educational Media & Technology Center, to be utilized as a teacher training exercise. It can also easily be adapted as an individual or collaborative student learning exercise. The video “Viruses and Monerans” is available for download in the Guest / Science Catalog on the e-Mod / iDVSTM Corporate Server.
Video Title: Viruses and Monerans
Read this lesson plan completely before watching the video.
After viewing the program all the way through, follow the instructions for each of the items below. (For the purpose of this teacher training exercise, your group should skip through the video and hunt for segments that support the activities listed below.)
Locate an image of a virus landing on a host cell. Use a Sticky Note to explain what the host cell helps the virus to accomplish. Adjust text font/size/style/color and the Sticky Note background color so that the information is easily readable when the video is projected on a classroom screen.
Find an audio segment no longer than 15 seconds that explains what a human anti-body does. Define the audio clip with a Text Box at the beginning, with a question answered by the audio track in the clip. Define the end of the clip with a Sticky Note containing a logical follow-up question. Adjust the font, as described above.
Locate an image of a virus attached to a host cell. Draw an arrow to the material injected into the host cell. Use the Text tool to identify the material. Adjust the font, as described above.
Find an example of a vegetable dependant on nitrogen fixing bacteria. Use the Audio Tool to describe how bacteria help this kind of plat grow.
Use the Text Tool and label the image “Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria.”
Locate an example of parasitic bacteria and label it using the Sticky Note tool. Make the background blue and the text white. Adjust the font, as described above.
Name and save your work with the appropriate file extension in the same folder as the video file “Viruses and Monerans”.
PC: <name>.anw
Mac: <name>.anx
To play your annotation file (and the associated “Viruses and Monerans” video), open the e-Mod / iDVSTM Viewer and browse to the location of your annotation file. When you open the annotation file, the video file will automatically be opened, as well.
